The Conference
The First International Conference on Motivational Interviewing (ICMI) will be held at the Casino Kursaal Conference Center in Interlaken, Switzerland, on 9 - 11 June 2008. The main goal of this meeting is to bring together researchers, experts and professionals who use motivational interviewing (MI) in various settings and disciplines. ICMI will be held every two years, in different countries around the world.
Originally developed within the addictions field, MI has been largely diffused to many other health-related fields, and is now widespread among professionals who deal with health change issues such as drinking, smoking, eating disorders, obesity, chronic diseases (diabetes, hypertension…), at-risk behaviors, physical activity, etc.
Whether we are general practitioners, internists, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses, counselors, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, or from many other disciplines, Motivational Interviewing has helped us to help our patients deal with and change health-related behaviors.
What work is being carried out in these various fields? ICMI will focus on various aspects of MI. It will address questions such as: how has MI evolved? How does it work? How is it diffused and integrated into different settings? How is it taught and learned?
The Program
The program will feature:
Plenary conferences given by invited speakers in the mornings.
Contributed presentations in the afternoons. They will include selected symposia and workshops, as well as poster presentations.
Pre-conference workshops: two pre-conference workshops are featured on Sunday, 8 June 2008: a one-day multilingual advanced practitioner MI workshop, and a one-day MITI coding introductory workshop (see below for details).
